List of Commercial Banks in Nepal

The commercial banks of Nepal are governed under the Finance Company Act 1974 and Bank and Financial Institution Act 2006. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) issue the guidelines which is mandatory among all commercial banks and financial institutions on interest rates provided by the banks or intitutions, interest ceilings and areas of investment.

Two main dominating banks on commercial banking sectors are: Nepal Bank Ltd. and Rastriya Banijaya Bank. Rastriya Banijya Bank is fully under the government control or say it is owned by government. Nepal Bank Limited is the bank with 40.5 percent government owned. The banking system deposition main portion is occupied by these two commericial bank and i.e. around 13.3 % of total deposition. While the loan distribution covers of around 10% of the total loan.

The first commercial bank established in Nepal is in 1980s for the foreign participation after which many other commercial banks emerges that may include Navil Bank, Nepal Investment Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Kathmandu, Everest Bank, Nepal Srilanka Merchant Bank, Nepal Bangladesh Bank, Nepal Bank of Ceylon now called Nepal Credit and Commerc Bank, etc. and many more. Till the end, of 2015 the number of commercial bank reached 30 in number which are under operational.
Along with commercial banks many development banks and financial institution has been established. The banking laws do not allowed to have a branch by a foreign banks. But every commercial banking can have special arrangement with the foreign banks for the payment and transfer money in and out.

The important role every commercial banks has to fulfill is to provide financial services to the public people, bussiness and companies. It plays an important role in maintaining sustainable grouwth in the economy of the nation ensuring economic and social stability along with it. The public deposites are used for providing loans to individuals and business firms. Commercial banks money from the interest income from those loans they have provided.
